Radiography Licensing Requirements & Exam Review
Every state has different requirements for dental assistants. In order to legally operate dental X-ray equipment and perform dental radiographic procedures in Oklahoma, a dental assistant must hold a current permit from the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry (OBD). To obtain a license, one must pass the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam.
Radiography Exam Review
This review covers the basic concepts of oral and maxillofacial radiology, which include:
- The historical background of dental X-rays
- Radiation physics
- Biology
- Radiation protection
- Infection control
- Dental X-ray machine components
- Dental film
- Digital receptor
- Anatomical landmarks
- Bitewings
- Periapical exposures
- Mounting films
Additionally, students will be able to identify and correct exposure or processing errors. Participants will expose, process, mount, and evaluate the radiographs on manikins.
This hands-on review clinical session is excellent for dental assistants planning to take the DANB to become a Licensed Dental Assistant (CDA). It will prepare students to:
- Take the DANB written exam
- Take satisfactory periapical, bitewing, and occlusal radiographs
- Become familiar with dental radiographs
- Self-analyze radiographic technical errors
Licensing in Dental Assistant Radiology
This review entails two educational components: a lecture session and a clinical session. The latter includes a hands-on and demonstrative approach and exercising the concepts taught in the lecture session. Some elements of this review may include:
- X-ray exposure and evaluation
- Radiology safety
- Troubleshooting and processing error
